Alvar's story

Annual Trans Surgery Fund recipient

Alvar (he/him) is a 23-year-old disabled transgender man living in Texas that has been struggling to access a hysterectomy. Due to his disabilities, he has to get accommodations at work that limit his hours. Because of the small number of hours he works, he lives paycheck to paycheck under the poverty line with around 70% of his income going to rent. With the deductible being too high for his hysterectomy, he attempted to raise funds via GoFundMe, but was unsuccessful.

Alvar lives with two transgender roommates that are his found family and best friends. They helped him escape from a poor living situation 3 years ago. He is a creative hoping to finish a degree someday in animation. He is an animal lover, with one of his best friends being his 16 year old cat, Kiwi, and a tea lover.

Being as that Alvar lives in Texas and doesn’t have the ability to relocate, reproductive laws currently are very restrictive. He is a queer trans man and if he were to get pregnant, it would cause immense harm to him both physically and mentally. He also has experienced uterine atrophy on HRT, causing him to have intense pain, discomfort, and nausea. Receiving a hysterectomy will improve Alvar’s health and quality of life tenfold.

About Hysterectomy

On average, it costs $10,000+ for Alvar's care.

What is it?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of the uterus.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

Many trans and non-binary individuals seek a hysterectomy for gender-affirming care. Many others, however, also have additional medical concerns, including the treatment of uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic pain, and certain types of cancers. Too often, trans folks who seek care with these additional medical concerns are still denied insurance coverage. It can also be hard for trans folks to find affirming surgeons in their region, especially in states and regions most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation.
