Amara's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Amara (she/her) is a trans woman who has faced significant barriers to safety, employment, and healthcare in her journey. After experiencing harassment and discrimination at a previous job, she now works for her family. As a brown trans woman living in an anti-trans state, finding secure and affirming employment has been incredibly difficult. Even now, her income is unpredictable, making it hard to commit to payment plans for medical care.

Amara is on HRT, and while it has helped reduce some hair growth, she still shaves daily. “Facial hair has left me misgendered or unsafe in an innumerable amount of situations,” she shares.

Laser hair removal would ease one of the greatest sources of Amara’s dysphoria and open doors to greater safety, confidence, and employment opportunities. “This would alleviate my biggest trigger,” she says. “And help me move forward with more freedom.”

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Access to hair removal often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
