Anastasia

Anastasia's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Anastasia (she/her) has always dreamed of simply being herself, fully and authentically. As a resilient Black trans woman, she has overcome significant adversity, including racism and transphobia, to begin living in alignment with who she knows herself to be. She started hormone therapy and took brave steps toward her truth. Still, financial barriers and gaps in trans-affirming healthcare kept facial hair removal out of reach, leaving her with persistent dysphoria and pushing her to withdraw from the world around her.

Anastasia finds deep joy in connection and community. She thrives in spaces where trans people come together to support one another, often lending her emotional strength and compassion to others who need it most.

The opportunity to access electrolysis brings new light into Anastasia’s life. In a world that too often tells Black trans women they are expendable, this care offers not just relief, but hope. It means she can show up fully, proudly, and safely as herself, even in the face of today’s hostile climate.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans femme people seeking hair removal on their face, neck, or an area of the body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.
