Astraia

Astraia's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Astraia (she/they) is a 29-year-old gender-nonconforming person facing steep systemic and financial barriers to HRT. There are no endocrinologists in their insurance network who will accept transgender patients, forcing them to seek out-of-network care they can’t afford. Even when an out-of-network option exists, Astraia isn’t sure whether their insurance would cover prescriptions, and the cost of appointments alone puts care out of reach.

Astraia also navigates autism, ADHD, and bipolar disorder, which makes steady full-time work difficult and limits their income. On a fixed budget, paying for an out-of-network specialist isn’t possible, and worsening dysphoria has made daily life harder. “My gender dysphoria has been really, really bad. I’m reaching out for any resources that can help me,” they shared. Receiving 12 months of HRT support would remove a major obstacle, offering relief, stability, and space to focus on health and functioning.
