Benjamin's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Benjamin  (he/him) is a 20-year-old trans man whose life was recently turned upside down after being hit by a drunk driver while driving his project car with his dog, Titus. Both he and Titus are recovering, but the accident has left Benjamin navigating physical therapy, spine surgeries, and TBI treatment while trying to get back on his feet in the automotive industry. Reduced work hours and medical restrictions have made it challenging to keep up with bills and healthcare needs.

Despite these hardships, Benjamin remains resilient. He’s an avid car enthusiast, an artist, and someone who loves to cook for his friends. At home, he’s surrounded by his beloved pets—two cats, Goose and Maverick, his dog Titus, several fish, and even a foster pup.

“Being on and off HRT really makes you feel ill,” Benjamin shares. “I’m so glad not to have to worry about it during this season of healing.” With this support, Benjamin is looking forward to stability, health, and continuing to build a future he feels excited about.

Grant details

$1,320 towards gender-affirming care.

About Testosterone+

On average, it costs $1,200+/year for Benjamin's care.

What is it?

Testosterone+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans men, trans masc, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Testosterone+ introduces a wide range of masculinizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
