Cali's story

Cali (she/her) is a 20-year-old disabled cancer patient who has been fighting cancer for the past three years. Throughout her treatment, she’s had to put her gender-affirming care on hold—but now, as she celebrates being cancer free, she’s finally ready to take the next steps in her transition. Unfortunately, she's struggling to access coverage for electrolysis, a necessary part of preparing for surgery.
Cali receives just $600 per month from SSI and is seeking support for her first two sessions so she can begin the process of filing for reimbursement. After years of hardship, including multiple mental health crises tied to dysphoria, this step means everything to her. Cali has been dreaming of these surgeries for five years, and receiving help would bring her closer to living the life she’s fought so hard for.

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.
