Candy's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Candy (she/her) is a Latinx trans woman currently facing housing insecurity. After spending nearly two years in a shelter from January 2023 to October 2024, she is now receiving temporary transitional housing support and working to access long-term housing programs.

Candy currently works part-time at a restaurant earning minimum wage and supplements her income through informal sex work. Despite her own challenges, she continues to support her mother, siblings, and grandmother in Venezuela, who are facing extreme poverty and medical needs. “Their situation makes me value the little I have,” she shares.

As a TPS holder with a work permit, Candy’s employment opportunities are limited as many employers are hesitant to hire Spanish-only speakers and trans women. Hair removal would be a meaningful step forward, allowing her to feel more confident as she registers for school, pursues her career, and begins focusing on her own well-being and future.

About Hair Removal: Femme Award

On average, it costs $2,300+ for Candy's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans femme people seeking hair removal on their face, neck, or an area of the body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Access to hair removal often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
