Chrissy's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Chrissy (she/her) is a proud trans woman, a dedicated parent of three, and a passionate music lover who plays guitar and collects records. She was married for nearly 23 years before losing her partner in 2020, and she now supports her family—including her son, who has Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy, and their two beloved pets—on a limited income.

Chrissy has been paying out-of-pocket for electrolysis. To continue treatment, she has sacrificed essentials like groceries and rent just to afford sessions. “To have help just means the world to me,” she shares. “I can finally go get treated without fighting insurance, and prepare for my surgery.”

After losing her job in May 2024 due to anti-trans discrimination, Chrissy filed complaints with the EEOC and Equality Ohio. She now makes $11.75 an hour—an income that makes continued treatment nearly impossible. "Since I found out I’ve been awarded funding, I have less anxiety, less stress. My depression has eased. I don’t feel hopeless and alone anymore. I feel like I’ll be ready when they call for my surgery.”

For Chrissy, this support is not just about care—it’s about reclaiming hope and finally moving forward in her transition.

About Hair Removal: Masc Award

On average, it costs $1,700+ for Chrissy's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans masc people seeking hair removal on an area of their body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans, even if such services are medical prerequisites for a covered surgery. For people who cannot afford hair removal, they are stuck without options to move forward with their healthcare needs.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

After completing hair removal, these folks are able to move forward with their surgeries. In itself, this often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, and more.
