Fable

Fable's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Fable (they/them) lives in a rural community of about 5,000 people where healthcare access is extremely limited. Past experiences with local providers have been traumatic: one nurse pressured Fable to find a “home church” and physically blocked the door during an exam, while another doctor in a nearby town dismissed them outright, saying, “We don’t do that here.” When Fable asked about HRT, they were told to “Google it” and try Atlanta, an overwhelming option given their autism and need for their spouse’s support when traveling.

Fable is also the primary caregiver for their autistic son, which makes it difficult to work or find childcare. Their spouse earns too much to qualify for disability, yet the family still lives paycheck to paycheck, often relying on credit cards during emergencies. Fable is already a few thousand dollars in medical debt from seeking answers to a possible chronic condition, though many doctors have dismissed their symptoms.

Fable shared, “Receiving HRT would finally let me focus on living as my authentic self without the constant fear of dismissal or denial. It would give me hope, stability, and the chance to move forward with confidence.”
