Meet Gracie

Gracie's story
HRT Access Fund recipient
Gracie (she/her) is a Black trans woman living in South Carolina, where a lack of supportive care makes daily life extremely challenging. After reporting her property manager for discrimination, she was wrongfully evicted and harassed by neighbors. Around the same time, she also faced sexual harassment and assault from a manager at her workplace, which led to her losing her job. Since then, she has lived between her car and with family while awaiting a disability determination after a car accident left her with scoliosis.
To make ends meet, Gracie occasionally earns a little income by doing makeup and hair for friends, family, or clients, while her loved ones support her when they are able. Despite these hardships, she continues to search for work, though she often encounters discrimination as a Black trans woman.
Gracie shared, “HRT access would allow me to truly feel like my authentic self and hopefully give me more opportunities that aren’t swayed by my appearance. Being ‘passable’ shouldn’t determine anyone’s worth, but in America, it’s often glorified or weaponized against trans women. For me, access to HRT would mean relief, dignity, and a chance to live without compromise.”
