Grizzly's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Grizzly (he/they) is a 39-year-old genderfluid person. They decided to go back to school to better their family and life when COVID started. With the rising cost of living along and the loss of health insurance, they have found it hard to stay afloat at times for even everyday medication. Grizzly is very active in the community. They have a passion for creating safe places for queer youth, especially in the state of Florida. Grizzly and their partner started CampOUT Florida, which just had their first official over night summer camp focusing on the mental health and well being for queer youth campers this past summer. Grizzly is excited to not have to worry about receiving the resources to obtain medication and resources to take one huge thing off their plate while finishing school and focusing on camp to become its best potential while not having to sacrifice every day life saving needs. Grizzly is proud to be a living example for queer trans youth that it gets better and easier.

Grizzly shared, "The ability to be outwardly representing how I identify helps even on a daily just by putting me in the right mood. The first time I talked to my provider I actually felt heard. And not only do they experience the same things I do, but they asked me where I am vision my trans journey. And other providers told me where they wanted me to be."

About Testosterone+

On average, it costs $1,200+/year for Grizzly's care.

What is it?

Testosterone+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans men, trans masc, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Testosterone+ introduces a wide range of masculinizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
