J's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

J (they/them) is a non-binary trans person living in a rural area of the South where gender-affirming care is effectively unavailable. Disabled and unable to drive, J has no local providers who will work with trans patients, no health insurance, and no steady income. They live in a household of three disabled people surviving on a very limited shared income and community support, so accessing HRT or other gender care has simply not been possible.

Despite these barriers, J remains determined to find a path toward well-being. A year of supported HRT would be life-changing, not just for their mental health, but for their ability to feel at home in their own body and to participate more fully in community life.

“I just want to stop surviving and start being myself,” J shared. Receiving care would mean finally moving from despair toward hope and stability.
