Kirian's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Kirian (they/them) is a Black nonbinary person navigating racism, fatphobia, and inconsistent care that have made it nearly impossible to access affirming medical providers. Though Medicaid is supposed to cover HRT, they’ve struggled to find providers who accept it while also offering safe, body-inclusive care. For Kirian, telehealth feels like the safest and most realistic option, but those services don’t currently accept their insurance.

Working in queer community organizing, Kirian earns about $800 a month and carries more than $2,000 in credit card debt from car expenses. With limited income, they’ve been unable to contribute to household expenses in years, and HRT has remained out of reach. “HRT feels like a luxury to me right now, although it would be a key to allowing me to finally exist in greater alignment with my whole self,” they shared.
