Mery's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Mery (she/her) is a trans woman who has faced serious challenges on her journey to live authentically. A survivor of gender-based violence, she has experienced assault, robbery, and identity theft, which led to the loss of her important documents. Without them, applying for stable, full-time work has been nearly impossible.

Despite these hardships, Mery is hopeful. Receiving support for gender-affirming hair removal would be a powerful first step in rebuilding her confidence and sense of safety. “I’ve never had laser hair removal or any kind of treatment before,” she shares. “This would be the beginning of becoming the best version of myself.”

For Mery, removing unwanted facial hair would allow her to express herself more freely, feel more comfortable in her body, and focus on the things she loves without carrying the weight of constant worry or dysphoria.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.
