Michelle's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Michelle (she/they) is an intersex trans femme navigating an incredibly challenging set of circumstances with strength and resilience. Living in the Midwest, she often fears for her safety and faces daily risks of discrimination. At 6'4", Michelle feels that testosterone shaped her body in ways that have left lasting dysphoria, even after nearly a year on HRT.

Despite her efforts, she still has to wax her entire body every week and shave her face twice a day. These routines take a toll, causing severe folliculitis, skin irritation, acne, and a persistent sense of discomfort in her own skin. “Thick body hair on every inch of my body and constant visible skin irritation are huge issues for me,” she shares.

Michelle is a full-time caregiver for both her mother, who is recovering from cancer, and her 90-year-old grandmother. While she’s paid minimum wage for her caregiving work, she’s also seeking a second job in hopes of staying afloat financially. Electrolysis would be life-changing for Michelle, helping ease the physical pain and dysphoria she experiences daily, and allowing her to feel more at home in her body as she continues caring for those around her.

About Hair Removal: Femme Award

On average, it costs $2,300+ for Michelle's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans femme people seeking hair removal on their face, neck, or an area of the body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Access to hair removal often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
