RJ

RJ's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

RJ (he/him) is a BIPOC trans man who is currently navigating a complex medical journey. He was fortunate to undergo the first stage of phalloplasty a year ago, a life-changing milestone that brought him closer to living fully as himself. However, the past year has been incredibly challenging. RJ has faced discrimination from medical staff, endured multiple repair surgeries, and even survived being hit by a semi-truck.

In just 18 months, he has undergone four surgeries and is now in the middle of a two-stage procedure to correct urethral complications. At a recent post-operative appointment, RJ learned that electrolysis on his scrotum is required to complete the next stage of his urethra repair. Unfortunately, the cost is out of reach.

Receiving this grant would be a critical step in allowing RJ to complete the care he needs and continue forward on his surgical journey. It would bring him one step closer to healing and fully living in a body that feels like home.

About Hair Removal: Masc Award

On average, it costs $1,700+ for RJ's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans masc people seeking hair removal on an area of their body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans, even if such services are medical prerequisites for a covered surgery. For people who cannot afford hair removal, they are stuck without options to move forward with their healthcare needs.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

After completing hair removal, these folks are able to move forward with their surgeries. In itself, this often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, and more.
