Meet Rome

Rome's story
HRT Access Fund recipient
Rome (he/they) began HRT in December 2019, determined to move forward with his transition even though the closest provider was two hours away. Since then, he has faced repeated disruptions, such as financial barriers, shifting laws in Texas, and the sudden loss of providers. At one point, his HRT doctor was wrongfully sued by a detransitioning patient. While the case was ultimately dismissed, the provider decided to stop offering HRT altogether, leaving Rome without consistent care. These setbacks have forced him on and off testosterone, each pause taking a toll on both his physical health and his mental well-being.
Despite these barriers, Rome continues to root his life in creativity and care. He enjoys video games, making art, tending to his plants, and spending time with his partner and their three beloved cats. These outlets have helped him stay grounded through years of instability with his transition.
For Rome, stable access to hormones is about more than medical care; it is about peace, confidence, and continuity. “Receiving this support means I can finally regulate my hormones and ease the dysphoria that comes with losing access to life-changing care,” he shared. With reliable HRT, Rome can focus on living fully as himself rather than bracing for the next disruption.

What is it?
Testosterone+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans men, trans masc, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Testosterone+ introduces a wide range of masculinizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
