Meet Rose

Rose's story
Electrolysis Support Fund recipient
Rose (she/they) is a 24-year-old Latinx trans femme who has faced incredible hardship and still holds on to hope for a better future. After being disowned by her family for being transgender, she left her home country in search of safety and opportunity in the U.S. Upon arrival, Rose found refuge at a youth shelter where she began her transition journey without legal status or a support system, taking on small jobs to survive.
She was later connected to temporary housing. Rose is currently working toward her GED and hopes to find work now that she was granted her work permit in 2024. However, language barriers, as she speaks only Spanish, and gender identity discrimination continue to limit her job opportunities.
Rose shares that laser hair removal would significantly support her mental health and self-esteem. “It would empower my mental health to strive in the direction I want to head toward,” she says. For Rose, this care represents not just a step in her transition, but a key part of reclaiming confidence and building the life she deserves.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?
For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Access to hair removal often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
