Ryder's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Ryder (he/him) is a 26-year-old trans man preparing for bottom surgery, a critical step in his transition. He’s currently employed at two jobs but only receives about 8 hours of work per week, nowhere near enough to afford the multiple electrolysis sessions required for surgery prep. While he has state insurance, he’s found that no local providers accept it, creating a financial barrier that’s significantly impacted his mental health and heightened his dysphoria.

“I don’t have the money to pay over $100 per session, and I need several. It’s putting a hold on my surgery and on feeling like myself,” he shares. Ryder is hopeful that accessing hair removal will allow him to move forward with surgery and begin living more comfortably and confidently in his body.

About Hair Removal: Masc Award

On average, it costs $1,700+ for Ryder's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans masc people seeking hair removal on an area of their body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans, even if such services are medical prerequisites for a covered surgery. For people who cannot afford hair removal, they are stuck without options to move forward with their healthcare needs.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

After completing hair removal, these folks are able to move forward with their surgeries. In itself, this often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, and more.
