Meet Sansa

Sansa's story
HRT Access Fund recipient
Thrive Fund recipient
Sansa (they/them) is a nonbinary person of color who has faced significant challenges in accessing affirming healthcare. They have experienced negative side effects from their blockers, and their concerns were dismissed by their previous providers. Without a proper blocker, they faced remasculinization, but when they sought alternatives, local doctors refused to explore other options. This led Sansa to seek care elsewhere, despite the financial and logistical barriers it posed.
Sansa has also faced scrutiny from local providers who questioned their identity and the validity of their transition because of their presentation and race. These providers, despite working in informed care clinics, failed to understand Sansa's decision to present neutrally or more masculine for safety reasons, further complicating their access to care. Now, as a transfeminine person struggling with dysphoria and societal biases, Sansa is working to confidently lean into their identity while navigating the challenges of unemployment, Long Covid, and the aftermath of a devastating house fire that claimed their dog and left their cat with ongoing medical needs.
Currently, Sansa’s voice is one of the major factors contributing to their dysphoria and a barrier to confidently presenting as their true self. Accessing voice therapy through the Thrive Fund will be a transformative step in Sansa's journey, helping them move toward a more confident and authentic life. With this support, they hope to overcome the societal and personal barriers that have held them back and build a future where they can thrive professionally and personally.

About Estrogen+
On average, it costs $1,700+/year for Sansa's care.
- What is it?
- Accessibility
- After care
What is it?
Estrogen+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans women, trans femme, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Estogen+ introduces a wide range of feminizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
About Voice Therapy/Vocal Training
On average, it costs $1,750+ for Sansa's care.
- What is it?
- Before care
- Accessibility
- After care
What is it?
Voice therapy or vocal training helps trans individuals modify their vocal pitch, resonance, and speech patterns to better align with their gender identity. This non-surgical approach can be used by trans femme, trans masc, and non-binary people.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
For trans individuals who experience dysphoria around their voice, daily interactions can be distressing and lead to avoidance of communication. A voice that doesn’t align with their gender presentation can result in misgendering and discrimination.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
While some insurance plans may cover voice therapy, many do not. Private sessions with licensed speech therapists can be expensive, and affirming providers may not be available locally, especially in rural areas.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Voice therapy can improve confidence, reduce dysphoria, and help trans individuals feel more authentic in their daily interactions. This often leads to better mental health and increased participation in social and professional environments.
