Sissy 's story

Sissy (she/her) is a transgender woman who has faced significant hardship and trauma throughout her life. As a survivor of childhood abuse and ongoing discrimination, she lives with complex mental health challenges that make it difficult to maintain employment. Many of her past jobs have been unsafe or hostile environments, where she experienced repeated bullying and harassment for simply being herself.
Because of the mistreatment she has faced, Sissy often chooses to sleep outside to avoid further harm. Despite everything, she knows who she is: a woman deserving of dignity, safety, and the opportunity to thrive. Gender-affirming care would be life-changing for her—providing safety, mental relief, and the chance to feel at home in her own body. With support, Sissy hopes to move toward a future where she is no longer punished for being who she truly is.

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.
