Sora's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Sora (he/him) is a 32-year-old disabled trans man who has been transitioning since 2013 and out since 2011. He has tried to get top surgery four times, but financial setbacks and major life changes have repeatedly halted his care. In 2023, he lost a remote job a week before a surgery consultation and with it his insurance. A year-long search for work and a denied state aid application left him unable to restart HRT. Where he lives now, only part-time jobs are available, and they do not offer insurance.

Sora is a full-time artist and costume maker who supports his local community theater and is launching a renaissance faire vendor business. He also enjoys painting and gardening. After more than a decade on hormones, time without HRT has taken a real toll on his mental health and daily functioning.

“Gender affirming care would help me both mentally and physically. I’m looking forward to being able to feel safe and at home in my own skin,” he shared.
