Meet Warren

Warren's story
Electrolysis Support Fund recipient
Warren (he/him) is a 47-year-old BIPOC disabled trans man working toward completing the final stages of his phalloplasty journey. Despite facing ongoing medical and financial challenges, Warren has remained determined to live as his authentic self. Rising costs have made it nearly impossible for him to make ends meet, and he had nearly given up on the dream of surgery.
Living in today’s political climate has taken a toll, and Warren has struggled with depression and anxiety about the future for himself and the broader LGBTQ+ community. But he refused to go back. Today, he mentors young LGBTQ+ individuals while encouraging them to engage in social, political, and civil rights movements.
Warren remains optimistic. “It’s been a long journey with many ups and downs, toils and snares,” he shares. “But my future is finally starting to look brighter. Each day, my confidence grows knowing I’m becoming the man I’ve always needed to be since I was three years old, begging my mom not to make me wear dresses or get my hair done. I’m doing this for that little boy. He can finally live his truth.”

What is it?
Point of Pride provides grants to trans masc people seeking hair removal on an area of their body in preparation for bottom surgery.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans, even if such services are medical prerequisites for a covered surgery. For people who cannot afford hair removal, they are stuck without options to move forward with their healthcare needs.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
After completing hair removal, these folks are able to move forward with their surgeries. In itself, this often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, and more.
