Point of Pride Calls Responds to the Right of Trans Student Athletes to Enjoy the Sports They Love
February 11, 2026
Earlier this month, major medical organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, have publicly advocated for restrictions on gender-affirming surgeries for transgender young people under the age of 19.
However, the American Academy of Pediatrics has held firm to its dedication to protecting access to health care for all young people by issuing a statement that states that the decision to pursue gender-affirming care, including surgeries, should "be left to doctors and patients and their families, not politicians."
In response to these developments, Point of Pride issued the following statement from Jeff Main, co-founder and Executive Director:
"The evidence has long been clear: gender-affirming health care is medically necessary and life-saving. We see this every day when a person is able to access this care, whether that be puberty blockers or hormone replacement therapy.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has made it clear that it stands by the science and the importance of ensuring that care remains accessible.
The decision to move forward with this kind of life-saving care is never taken lightly. Patients, their loved ones and their medical providers spend years discussing options before they decide to move forward with a care plan that is both individualized and considered.
We ask that the American Academy of Pediatrics continue its long-standing commitment to providing informed and research-based professional guidance in promoting healthier, happier lives for young people across the country. Politics have no place in the exam room."
Point of Pride's mission is help trans youth and adults access necessary, life-saving health and wellness services. To date, Point of Pride has awarded $4,478,500 in financial aid and provided gender-affirming support to 30,000 people in all 50 states and around the world.
