Gwen's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Gwen (she/they) is a disabled trans woman, domestic violence survivor, and mother who has faced relentless barriers to accessing gender-affirming care. She has experienced financial struggles, legal battles, housing insecurity, and the loss of her HRT for months at a time, all while raising her children and trying to keep her family safe.

For years, Gwen lived off-grid with her children and their cat on a forest homestead she built herself, surrounded by the nature and cloudy days she loves. But following a divorce, county crackdowns on off-grid living, and ongoing harassment in her rural community, Gwen and her children are now facing the threat of homelessness. On top of this, her abusive ex is attempting to take custody of their trans children, forcing Gwen to spend what little she has on legal fees just to protect them.

Despite everything, Gwen continues to fight for stability and joy for herself and her kids. She shared, “My HRT is keeping me alive and giving me the chance to experience joy when the opportunity presents itself. Receiving this support is truly a lifeline for me and my children.”

About Estrogen+

On average, it costs $1,700+/year for Gwen's care.

What is it?

Estrogen+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans women, trans femme, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Estogen+ introduces a wide range of feminizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
