Meet Angel

Angel's story
Electrolysis Support Fund recipient
Angel (she/her) is a resilient transgender woman originally from Micronesia. After coming out to her parents, she faced rejection and years of deep depression and anxiety stemming from gender dysphoria and a lack of family support. Forced to leave home, Angel fled to the United States for safety and a chance to live authentically. Upon arriving, she was robbed of her belongings including her passport and ID, and spent several years experiencing homelessness.
Despite these challenges, Angel remained determined. She connected with a support organization that gave her some stability. Now receiving benefits, Angel has a small income, but it isn’t enough to afford electrolysis. Facial hair continues to be a major source of dysphoria, making it difficult to leave home. Receiving hair removal care is a crucial step toward helping Angel feel more confident, reconnect with others, and move forward in her life with hope and dignity.

What is it?
Point of Pride provides grants to trans femme people seeking hair removal on their face, neck, or an area of the body in preparation for bottom surgery.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Access to hair removal often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
